Future students - How to apply
Courses at the Asia Institute give particular emphasis to the study of Japan, China, Indonesia and the Arab and Islamic worlds and aim to promote the study of the rich languages, intellectual, cultural, political and religious traditions of Asia and Islam as well as their contemporary manifestations. Academic staff of the Institute contribute expertise in diverse areas of Asian studies, drawing on broad interdisciplinary knowledge.
Subjects may be drawn from other areas of study, including history, political science, geography, gender studies, fine arts, law (Asian Law Centre), management (Faculty of Economics and Commerce), medicine (Key Centre for Women's Health) and in the Faculties of Architecture, Building & Planning and Music.
Opportunities also exist for students to undertake interdisciplinary research projects under joint supervision from academic staff in other departments.

Undergraduate
Undergraduate students can undertake a major or minor sequence in one of the Institute's program areas as part of a Bachelor of Arts program, or as a concurrent Diploma in Languages. Our subjects can also be studied as the breadth component of another undergraduate degree. For more information please see the Future Students The Melbourne Degrees web page.

Undergraduate students are encouraged to enhance their language skills by taking advantage of the opportunities for overseas study as part of the University's Melbourne Global Mobility program.

Please note: Some subjects may require you to undertake a brief interview and/or placement test. Please note that this is only conducted after you have been offered a place in the course, and the outcome does not affect whether or not your application is successful. The interview and/or placement test is intended solely to determine your level of existing ability, in order to allocate you to an appropriate class.
- Diploma in Languages is offered concurrent to a Bachelor degree program. To apply for a concurrent Diploma, you need to be already enrolled in a Bachelor degree program at the University of Melbourne. For more information, please contact the Faculty of Arts.
- Cross-Institutional Study: Incoming and Outgoing (complementary studies) are available to applicants from other tertiary institutions who meet certain requirements. Application details are available from the complementary studies page.
- Single Subject Study (Community Access Program) in the Faculty of Arts is available for members of the public to undertake subjects outside the normal degree structure. More information including application details are available on the University's Community Access Program web page.
Applicants from educationally, financially or socially disadvantaged backgrounds should consider applying through the Access Melbourne program.
Honours
An Honours year offers you the opportunity to thoroughly explore your particular area of interest, to refine your research, analytic and written skills and enhance your career options after graduation. An Honours year can also prepare you for further postgraduate study.
Those students who have completed an undergraduate degree with a major sequence in one of the Institute's program areas are encouraged to consider applying for Honours.
Pure Honours is available in Arabic studies, Chinese studies, Indonesian studies and Japanese studies. Combined Honours is available in Asian studies and Islamic Studies.

Postgraduate: Coursework
The Asia Institute offers a range of postgraduate coursework degrees including Graduate Diplomas, Postgraduate Diplomas, and Masters degrees by coursework. These degrees are offered through the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Masters: Research
For students interested in Masters research degrees, an overview of the research areas of staff and postgraduate students at the Institute can be found on our research page. Research interests in the department are broad, spanning a wide range disciplines as well the various language and area specialisations. PhD
If you are interested in a program, your first step is to identify a potential supervisor at the University of Melbourne, and to approach them directly about your proposal. You can resource research information about the Asia Institute from our Research web page, which lists published work of supervisors, research in progress and higher degree research of current students. Scholarships
Australian citizens and permanent residents
There are a range of scholarships available to local applicants.
Undergraduate applicants may be required to submit an application for some scholarships, but will be automatically considered for others. Please refer to the Scholarships website for further information:

Asia Institute PhD Top-up Scholarships
The Asia Institute is offering top-up scholarships worth $5000 per annum to the Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) for selected outstanding local and international PhD applicants who intend to commence their full-time PhD studies at the Asia Institute in 2013.To apply for the Asia Institute PhD Top-Up Scholarship, please complete the Application Form180kb pdf and submit directly to the Asia Institute by 1st October 2012.
PhD scholarship opportunity in documentary and descriptive linguistics
Offering a PhD scholarship to describe and document a seriously endangered language spoken along the Barito River in Central Kalimantan Province in Indonesian Borneo. The scholarship is based in the Asia Institute, is part of an ARC Discovery Project, and is valued at $22,860 per year.
Starting date: July 2012 and Application deadline: 31 May, 2012.

All international applicants who are made an unconditional offer of a place are automatically considered for available scholarships. Applicants cannot be considered for scholarships until all conditions attached to the offer have been met.

The Lionel Phillips Scholarship for Asian Studies
Offered by Queen's College, University of Melbourne.
The scholarship is given in honour of Lionel Philips (Arts, 1940) who spent much of his life in Japan working in the Australian diplomatic service. It is awarded to an honours or a post-graduate student who is pursuing a degree in the following areas: (a) Japanese, Chinese or Korean language, history or culture; (b) Australia's relations with Japan, China or Korea; or (c) Business or legal studies focusing on Japan, China or Korea. The scholarship is valued at $7,500 per annum.
