Language Interviews, Placement Tests and Timetables

Semester 1
Arabic & Islamic Studies
New students of the Institute who have studied Arabic in the past are required to sit a placement test to ascertain the appropriate level of enrolment. The placement test for Semester One, 2009 will be held on Thursday, 26 February, 2009, 12.00 – 2:00pm, Room 115, Level 1, Sidney Myer Asia Centre.
Students are not required to register for the test.
Arabic Studies and Islamic Studies Introduction Meeting
An Introduction Meeting will be held for all students who will be enrolling in Arabic Studies or Islamic Studies subjects in 2009. This meeting will be held on Thursday, 26 February, 2009, 2.15pm – 3.15pm, 3rd floor Meeting Room, Room 321, Sidney Myer Asia Centre Building.
Chinese Studies Interviews
All students who wish to study Chinese language in 2009 and have not previously studied Chinese in the Institute are required to attend an interview and fill out this form. All interviews will be held on Wednesday, 25 February in room 116, 9:00am – 5:00pm, and Thursday, 26 February 2009 in room 116, 9:00am – 1:30pm, Sidney Myer Asia Centre. Students must complete the form titled “Prospective New Student” (available from Reception, Room 241, Sidney Myer Asia Centre Building) and bring it with them to their interview. A list of interview times and locations will be displayed on the Chinese Language notice board on the 1st floor of the Sidney Myer Asia Centre from Tuesday 5 February 2009. Students are required to sign up.
Interviews will be conducted in the Sidney Myer Asia Centre, for students who wish to enrol in the following subjects Chinese 1A (Beginners), Chinese 2E (Post-VCE Non-Background Speaker), Chinese 4A and Chinese 5A (Background Speaker).
Chinese Studies Placement Test
New students of the Institute may be required to sit a placement test. Such students will be informed at their interview whether they will be required to do so. The placement test for Semester One, 2009 will be held on Thursday 26 February 2009, 2:00pm.
Venue: Room 116, Level 1, Sidney Myer Asia Centre.
Japanese Studies
New students who have previous experience in Japanese (e.g. studied at secondary school, studied in Japan) are required to sit a placement test to ascertain the appropriate level of enrolment. The test consists of two parts; a self-assessment test and a short oral interview. The placement test for Semester One, 2009 will be held on Thursday, 26 February 2009, 10:00am – 1:00pm.
Venue: Charles Pearson Theatre, Room 132, First Floor, Education Resource Centre.
Students are not required to register for this test and must arrive at the above venue before the starting time. The short oral interview will be held immediately after the completion of the self-assessment test. You will be advised of the venue details at the placement test.
Indonesian Studies
The placement test for Semester One, 2009 will be held on Wednesday 25 February 2009, 10:00am – 12:00pm, room 115, First Floor, Sidney Myer Asia Centre Building. Students are not required to register for this test.
Note: Interviews and Placement test results for all languages may indicate that a student's entry to any language program may be mid-year.
Semester 2
Arabic & Islamic Studies
Students wishing to enrol in Arabic subjects in second semester will only be permitted to do so if they have completed the prerequisites for the subjects in which they wish to enrol or on the satisfactory completion of an appropriate placement test.
The placement test will be held on Wednesday 22 July 2009, 12 noon, room 113, first floor, Sidney Myer Asia Centre Building. Students are not required to register for this test. Students only need to arrive at the above venue before the starting time.
Students who do not attend the placement test on that day will not be permitted to enrol. It is not possible to make alternative arrangements for individual students to accommodate mid-year entry.
Chinese Studies Interviews
Students wishing to enrol in Chinese subjects in second semester will only be permitted to do so if they have completed the prerequisites for the subjects in which they wish to enrol or on the satisfactory completion of an appropriate interview and/or placement test. Students who have not studied Chinese previously will need to fill out this form. Students will be informed at their interview whether they will be required to sit a placement test or not.
All interviews will be held on Wednesday 22 July 2009, 10:00am- 2:00pm, room 115, first floor, Sidney Myer Asia Centre Building. Students are to complete the form titled “Prospective New Student” and bring it with them to their interview. A list of interview times will be displayed on the Chinese Program notice board located on the 1st floor of the Sidney Myer Asia Centre Building from Monday 6 July 2009. Students are required to sign up for the interviews.

Indonesian Studies
Students wishing to enrol in Indonesian subjects in second semester will only be permitted to do so if they have completed the prerequisites for the subjects in which they wish to enrol or on the satisfactory completion of an appropriate placement test. The placement test will be held on Wednesday, 22 July 2009, 11.00 am, Room 116, first floor, Sidney Myer Asia Centre Building. Students are not required to register for this test. Students only need to arrive at the above venue before the starting time.
Students who do not attend the placement test on that day will not be permitted to enrol. It is not possible to make alternative arrangements for individual students to accommodate mid-year entry.

All Asia Institute undergraduate tutorials will be allocated through Alloc8. Please remember that you must be enrolled in a subject before you can receive a tutorial allocation.

LOTE Accreditation Exams
The Institute holds examinations for LOTE accreditation for prospective teachers of Arabic, Chinese, Indonesian and Japanese in the first or second week of January and June each year. All examinations consist of written and oral components. For further information on how to apply, dates and fees for 2009 please select the LOTE form below for language in which you are interested.
Thesis Submission
Semester 1 minor theses should be submitted to the Asia Institute on Monday June 1st, 2009.
