Future Students
Courses at Asia Institute give particular emphasis to the study of Japan, China, Indonesia and the Arab and Islamic worlds and aim to promote the study of the rich languages, intellectual, cultural, political and religious traditions of Asia and Islam as well as their contemporary manifestations. Academic staff of the Institute contribute expertise in diverse areas of Asian studies, drawing on broad interdisciplinary knowledge.
Subjects may be drawn from other areas of study, including history, political science, geography, gender studies, fine arts, law (Asian Law Centre), management (Faculty of Economics and Commerce), medicine (Key Centre for Women's Health) and in the Faculties of Architecture, Building & Planning and Music.
Opportunities also exist for students to undertake interdisciplinary research projects under joint supervision from academic staff in other departments.

Undergraduate
Undergraduate students can undertake a major sequence in one of the Institute's program areas as part of a Bachelor of Arts program or a concurrent Diploma. Click on the links below to learn more about each program area:
Undergraduate students are encouraged to enhance their language skills by taking advantage of the opportunities for overseas study as part of the University's Melbourne Global Mobility program.

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree is offered as a single degree or combined with another Faculty degree (eg: Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science). Click here for application details.
Diploma in Modern Languages or the Diploma in Arts are offered concurrent to a Bachelor degree program. To apply for a concurrent Diploma, please contact the Arts Faculty.
Complementary studies (cross institutional studies) are available to applicants from other tertiary institutions who meet certain requirements. Application details are available from the complementary studies page.
Community Access Program (CAP) is available for members of the public to undertake subjects outside the normal degree structure. Application details are available from the CAP page.
Honours
An Honours year offers you the opportunity to thoroughly explore your particular area of interest, to refine your research, analytic and written skills and enhance your career options after graduation. An Honours year can also prepare you for further postgraduate study.
Those students who have completed an undergraduate degree with a major sequence in one of the Institute's program areas are encouraged to consider applying for Honours.
Pure Honours is available in Arabic studies, Chinese studies, Indonesian studies and Japanese studies. Combined Honours is available in Asian studies and Honours in Islamic studies will be available from 2007.

Postgraduate
The department offers a range of postgraduate coursework and research degrees including Graduate Diplomas, Postgraduate Diplomas, and Masters degrees by coursework or research. The postgraduate program pages listed below contain additional information on each program area and the degrees offered.
For students interested in Masters research degrees, an overview of the research areas of staff and postgraduate students at the Institute can be found on our research page. Research interests in the department are broad, spanning a wide range disciplines as well the various language and area specialisations.

PhD
If you are interested in a PhD program, you are strongly encouraged to contact the relevant course coordinator in order to discuss your suitability for candidature and your proposed course of study.
You can resource research information about the Institute from our research page, which lists published work of supervisors, research in progress and higher degree research of current students.
Your application for PhD must be recommended by the department. This indicates that the department is satisfied with your academic background, that your research topic is deemed suitable, and that adequate supervision for your topic is available.
