Does Asia Institute offer short courses?

No, not directly. Short courses are offered by the Horwood Language Centre including some Asian Languages. These are particular useful for business and other travellers. More information is available from http://www.hlc.unimelb.edu.au.

How do I apply for CAP?

All applicants must apply directly to the Faculty of Arts. Application procedures, fees and forms are available here.

How do I enrol in a language subject if I am not doing an Arts Degree?

If you are not enrolled in any degree in the University you can apply to do single subjects as a non-degree student via the Community Access Program.

If you are enrolled in a University of Melbourne degree you can either (1) apply directly to the Faculty of Arts for a concurrent Diploma of Modern Languages or (2) request your non-Arts Faculty to add language subjects to your current degree (most Faculties allow subjects from Arts to be included as part of their degree structure).

How do I apply to study a BA?

All application information are available from the Faculty of Arts website.

I would like to take the LOTE examination. How?

LOTE examinations are held twice a year, in January and June for each language. More information and applications can be found here.

Can I learn an Asian language as a beginner?

Yes - many students start an Asian language with no or little prior knowledge of it. Placement tests, interviews, and introductory meetings are held prior to the commencement of each semester in order to determine the appropriate level of entry into a language program. Are any scholarships / grants available?

How do I find a supervisor in Asia Institute for my research?

Contact the course coordinator in the first instance. He/she can provide advice regarding suitable supervisors within Asia Institute and maybe external to Asia Institute.   Please visit the Asia Institute Postgraduate website for information on the research interests of academics in Asia Institute.

What facilities does Asia Institute provide for postgaduate students?

Aside from the facilities provided by the Faculty of Arts and the School of Graduate Studies, Asia Institute provides additional facilities and resources specifically for its students.  For further information please see our postgrad facilities guide.

Are any courses offered by distance study or on-line?

Currently there are no distance education undergraduate or postgraduate courses.
