Background
Sachiyo Sekiguchi obtained her MA in Applied Japanese Linguistics from Monash University and Graduate Diploma in Education (ESL and Japanese) from victoria University of Technology. She is currently undertaking her PhD in Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) at the University of Melbourne. Prior to joining the University, Sachiyo held teaching posts at the University of New England, Monash University and a number of other Australian educational institutions and also held positions as an education consultant in a number of private enterprises for Japanese language education and teaching materials.
Research Interests
Sachiyo has research interests in computer mediated communication for language and cultural learning, including video conferencing and virtual community for intercultural learning. Researching how to integrate network based communication technology for language learning to bring the target language and culture into the conventional classroom. One of her most recent projects is Virtual Babel, a web-based 3D virtual environment for enhancing language and cultural learning, providing interactive venues for students to interact using the language they are learning in the target discourse community. She has been actively investigating methods of student video conferencing between universities in Japan and The University of Melbourne.
