Background
Dr Sayuki Machida is a lecturer in the Japanese Program at the Institute of Asian Languages and Societies in the Faculty of Arts. As the Coordinator of the Language Program (1999-2004), she coordinated and lead the development and assessment of the new MA, enhanced mode Japanese, and content-based advanced language subjects. She has also acted as the Head of Program several times. She has published her articles on the second language acquisition in international journals. Prior to the current position, she taught Japanese at the University of Queensland and Rutgers University in USA, and English as a second language in Japan. She also has substantial experience as coordinator for both academic and administrative teams.
Research Interests
Sayuki is interested in teaching and learning of second language. She is especially interested in Interlanguage – learners’ language development in their second language. She is therefore committed to a wide range of exploration and research surrounding second language learning and teaching. Her research interests include learners’ language achievement, curriculum development, language course management, language & culture, and computer aided language learning. Her publications include articles on learners’ strategy use in writing, anxiety in oral examination, reading comprehension of the text and collaborative learning. She is currently working on text analysis, reading comprehension, translation as a teaching methodology and language course development.
