Background
Dr Mariko Kubota joined the University of Melbourne in 1991. She has a BEd from Hiroshima University, and MA and Ph.D. from Monash University. Her Ph.D. examined the structures of Japanese compound verbs. Prior to her appointment as a lecturer in Japanese at the University of Melbourne, she was a lecturer in Japanese at Swinburne University of Technology. She also has taught Japanese History and Geography at Moriyama Junior High School, in Nagoya, and Japanese at Rockhampton Grammar School in Queensland.
Research Interests
Mariko’s research interests lie in second language acquisition; particularly with regard to motivation for learning Japanese, individual differences in second language acquisition, kanji (Chinese characters) acquisition, and vocabulary learning. She is also interested in lexicology and Japanese female speech styles. She is currently engaged in a study of grammaticality judgement tests, and a survey on Japanese exchange students.
