Background
Dr Gao Jia is a graduate of Renmin University of China, formerly known as the People's University of China, in Beijing. He was a lecturer in social psychology and sociology at the same university, and he was also in charge of a number of research programs there before coming to Australia in 1988. In the same year, Dr Gao was awarded the first national academic prize in sociological studies by China's National Commission of Education and Fok Ying Tung Foundation. He completed his PhD in human geography at the University of Melbourne, where he started teaching in its Chinese program as a casual tutor in 1993, and has been in his current position since 1997. Dr Gao teaches various subjects in the institute including Contemporary Chinese Society and Advanced Chinese.
Research Interests
Dr Gao’s current research interests include contemporary Chinese society and the new Chinese migrant community in Australia. He has carried out continuing longitudinal research on the experiences of new Chinese migrants in Australia since 1988. At the same time, he has pursued his research interests in applied social psychological and sociological studies of post-1978 Chinese society, with a focus on public opinion and socio-political dynamics, social stratification, elite dominance and ideology in post-Mao China. He has also worked extensively on English-Chinese academic translation, and has been involved in proof-reading and editing a number of translation and research books. Dr Gao has produced wide-ranging publications in both English and Chinese, of which a selected list is available on the university’s website.
