Background
Michael Ewing received his PhD in linguistics from the University of California at Santa Barbara. Prior to that he studied anthropology at the University of California at Santa Cruz and applied linguistics at the University of Hawai'i. Before coming to the University of Melbourne, Michael lectured at Syiah Kuala University and Lampung University in Indonesia and at the University of Hawai'i.
Research Interests
Most recently Michael has been working in the field of endangered languages and is currently documenting the Allang language of Ambon Island, Maluku as part of the project Endangered Moluccan Languages: Eastern Indonesia and the Dutch Diaspora. His research also involves grammatical structure in the context of naturally occurring discourse. In this area he has focussed especially on the relationship between interpersonal interaction and grammar in both Indonesian and Javanese conversational language, using corpus-based linguistic analysis. Michael has also done work on the acquisition of Indonesian as a foreign language and computer assisted language learning. In addition, he has had a long involvement with Indonesian performing arts (especially the gamelan of West and Central Java) as a student, performer, and teacher.
