Faculty of Arts Asia Institute

Welcome from the Director

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to your studies at the Asia Institute on behalf of our team of dedicated academic and professional staff. Whether you are continuing to pursue studies of the peoples, languages or cultures of Asia and Islam, or are approaching these areas for the first time, we are confident that your time with us will be both rewarding and challenging.

Our programs in Chinese, Japanese, Arabic and Indonesian languages offer comprehensive grounding in the language, with opportunities to focus on social, historical and cultural areas of interest.

The Institute's Asian and Islamic studies majors are a collaborative effort between the Asia Institute and other schools and faculties from across the University, and provide a comprehensive program of study in the rich intellectual, legal, political, cultural and religious traditions of Asia and the Middle East.

You have chosen an area of study that provides a wealth of opportunities for you in pursuing or deciding upon your future career path. The importance of Asia and the Middle East to Australia - and the world - continues to grow at a significant pace. Asia comprises many of Australia's largest and most important trading partners and trade and diplomatic exchanges between Australia and the Middle East continue to grow in both numbers and importance.

Our students have sought careers in a broad spectrum of categories including politics, diplomacy, non-profit organizations, finance, trade, teaching and academic research. We believe that the Asia Institute's programs will allow you to open doors to your future career opportunities, to expand your knowledge and form lifelong friendships with people from different backgrounds and cultures.

Welcome to the Asia Institute and enjoy your studies.

Professor Abdullah Saeed, Director, Asia Institute.
